ScraptronA space survivors-like for Android

A space survivors-like: one thumb, auto-firing guns, endless swarms.

Scraptron is in closed testing on Google Play. The public release comes after the test round.

Scraptron is a survivors-like set in space, a bullet heaven where all you do is steer: your ship fires on its own while you weave through swarms closing in from every side. Survive three sectors, beat the boss at the end of each one, and bring the scrap home to the hangar for the next run.

How a run works

A run is three sectors of five minutes each. Every sector belongs to a different enemy faction, and the mix of enemies is shuffled every run, so you never quite know what’s coming. At the end of a sector a boss shows up. Beat it, open the loot capsule it leaves behind and fly through the portal into a bonus stage. Get through all three sectors and the run counts as survived.

Three factions, thirty kinds of enemies

The Swarm is living rock, ice, plasma and comets that come at you in numbers. The Machines are boxy gunships that stop, take aim and fire. The Crystalline are cut glass, beams and shields. Thirty kinds of enemies in all, each with its own habits, and every dangerous attack is telegraphed before it lands, so a hit is always something you could have dodged.

13 bosses

Each faction brings its own bosses, thirteen in total: the Caldera, the Bolide, the Magnetar and the Tempest from the Swarm; the Gunship, the Scrapper, the Vault, the Mothership and the Dreadnought from the Machines; the Cruiser, the Mirror, the Twin Probes and the Aurora from the Crystalline. They are big and fast, they never stop shooting, and they change tactics as they lose health. Beat one without taking a single hit and you get the Clean Sweep bonus.

Ten weapons, five ranks each

Before a run you pick up to three weapons in the hangar. During the run every level-up puts three cards in front of you: a new rank for one of your weapons or one of nine passive upgrades. You start with the pulse cannon, the turret and the escort drone, and unlock the scattergun, the railgun, the blade rotor, the continuous laser, gravity mines, the EMP emitter and the plasma arc along the way. No two runs build the same ship.

Nine ships and a hangar

Scrap from every run goes into the hangar: permanent upgrades, new weapons and new ships. There are nine ships, each with one ability of its own. The Wedge is free, the Bastion, Ram, Hornet and Scythe are bought with scrap, and the Falcon, Spire, Manta and Stinger with Iridium. The Iridium ships play differently; they aren’t stronger.

Bonus stages: the Canyon and the Tunnel

After every boss a portal opens and waits for you. The Canyon is a fast flight down a narrow corridor full of moving obstacles, scrap and Iridium crystals. The Tunnel is a wireframe tube where you slip through gates and shoot down swarms. Crashing ends the bonus but never takes away what you’ve already collected.

The Depths: an endless mode

Survive a full run and the Depths open up. Here sectors last two and a half minutes, each with a new faction and a boss at the end, and it simply doesn’t stop. Enemies toughen up from the fourth sector, and from the tenth the Event Horizon pushes their damage higher every thirty seconds. Your record is the deepest sector you reach, with a separate Google Play leaderboard for each difficulty level.

Difficulty, contracts and achievements

There are four difficulty levels, from Easy to Nightmare. Each one unlocks once you survive a full run on the level before, and each pays more scrap. Daily contracts give you something to aim for, the Pilot’s Log rewards the days you play, and from your fourth run a starter pack lets you begin with a trade-off card such as Glass Cannon or Thick Hull. Sign in to Google Play Games for 32 achievements, leaderboards and a cloud save.

Free to play

Scraptron is free. Iridium, the rare currency, comes from the last boss of a run, crystals in the bonus stages, contracts, the Pilot’s Log and the Depths, and you can also buy it in packs. Ads only appear when you ask for one: for a second chance, double scrap, an extra pick from a loot capsule or a level-up at the start of a run.

Questions and answers

What kind of game is Scraptron?
A survivors-like, a genre also called bullet heaven or auto shooter. You only steer, your weapons fire on their own, and every level-up you pick one of three upgrades while the swarm keeps growing. Scraptron takes it to space, in neon colours.
How long is a run?
Three sectors of five minutes, plus the boss fights and bonus stages in between, so a full run takes around twenty minutes. The Depths go on for as long as you survive.
Does my ship get stronger between runs?
Yes. Scrap buys permanent upgrades in the hangar, new weapons and four of the ships. Four more ships cost Iridium, but they change how you play rather than make you stronger.
Is there an endless mode?
Yes, the Depths. It opens after your first survived run: shorter sectors, a boss after each one, and enemies that keep getting tougher. Your deepest sector goes on a Google Play leaderboard.
Do I need to sign in?
No. Signing in to Google Play Games is optional and adds achievements, leaderboards and a cloud save.
When can I play it?
Scraptron is in closed testing on Google Play. The public release follows the test round.
