Sonar StrikeA sea battle game against the computer

A sea battle against the computer, with a sonar up your sleeve.

Get it on Google Play

Sonar Strike is the sea battle you used to play on squared paper, now against a computer that hunts properly once it lands a hit. Place your fleet, fire at the enemy grid, and when you get stuck looking for the last ships, send out a sonar ping.

The rules you know from paper

Each side has a 10×10 grid and ten ships: one of four squares, two of three, three of two and four single squares. Ships can’t touch, not even at the corners. Drag them onto the board one by one, or press Random and let the game place the whole fleet for you. A hit or a sinking earns you another shot, and the same goes for the computer, so one good streak can turn the whole game around. When a ship goes down, the water around it is marked automatically.

The sonar

The sonar is your one unfair advantage. A scan covers a 3×3 area of the enemy grid: empty squares turn into water, and you learn how many ship squares are hiding inside. It never hits anything and doesn’t cost you your turn, but it narrows the search fast. You can use up to three scans in a match. The first one is free, and whenever you want more you can earn them by watching a short ad, keeping up to nine in reserve.

A computer that hunts

The computer fires blind until it lands a hit. Then it checks the squares around it, works out the direction and follows the ship to the end. It never peeks at your fleet. Switch on Slow AI and it takes its time, muttering lines like “Bribing the sonar operator…” or “Asking the octopus…” while it thinks. Switch it off and it answers almost instantly.

An old radar screen

Green grids, glowing markers, scanlines and a radar display in the background, like an old naval console. If green isn’t your colour, pick any other on the colour wheel in Options. The game keeps your score, 100 points a hit and 500 for a sinking, and times every match, and when it’s over the enemy fleet is revealed, so you can see exactly where the ships you were looking for were hiding.

Free, without banners

Sonar Strike is free, with no banners and no full-screen ads. The only ad in the game is the one you choose to watch for an extra sonar scan. It plays in English and Polish, and both sound and vibration can be switched off.

Questions and answers

What are the rules?
Ten ships per side on a 10×10 grid: one of four squares, two of three, three of two and four single squares. Ships can’t touch, even diagonally, and every hit or sinking gives you another shot. Sink the whole enemy fleet before the computer sinks yours.
What does the sonar do?
It scans a 3×3 area of the enemy grid, marks the empty squares as water and tells you how many ship squares are inside. It never hits a ship and doesn’t use up your turn.
How do I get more sonar scans?
The first scan is free. After that you get one for each short ad you choose to watch, up to six a day, and you can keep up to nine in reserve. You can use three per match.
Is the computer hard to beat?
It plays fair: random shots until it hits, then it hunts the ship down square by square. It doesn’t see your fleet. Slow AI only changes how long it thinks, not how well it plays.
Can I play against a friend?
Not at the moment. Sonar Strike is a single-player game against the computer.
Is Sonar Strike free?
Yes. There are no purchases and no banner or full-screen ads, only an optional ad for an extra sonar scan.
